GRITTY CRIME THRILLER IS GRANITE CITY BESTSELLER TOP PAPERBACK FOR WEEKS AT WATERSTONE’S
HIS tale of murder and corruption on the streets of Aberdeen was shunned by the country’s publishing houses.
Lance Black’s determination to ge this gritty crime thriller in to print has been rewarded with a place at the top of the bestseller list, however.
Direct Action hit the shelves three weeks ago, and since then has maintained its position as the biggest selling paperback in the Union Bridge branch of Aberdeen’s Waterstone’s.
Superintendent David Ross’s attempts to discover the truth about a violent crime in a city of billionaires, corrupt criminal lawyers and vigilantes has captured the imagination of locals, selling more than 2,000 copies.
Mr Black, who was brought up in the city and now lives in the west end, said he was delighted with the book’s success but admits the publication process proved challenging.
The 39-year-old said: “I found that most publishers don’t want a book that’s just about Aberdeen so I had to do everything myself, and that was a long process.
“I had to go down south for a lot of it, and eventually I found a printer in Peterborough who would do the job.”
He said his work, with its vivid description of Aberdeen landmarks, bore comparisons with Ian Rankin’s Edinburgh-based Rebus novels, as well as the legal thrillers of American novelist John Grisham.
Mr Black said he was inspired to write about crime and “the causes of antisocial behaviour” several years ago after his car was attacked by vandals in Aberdeen as he sat in traffic.
He later undertook a law degree, then worked in the software industry, before finally realising his literary ambitions.
He added: “The book portrays Aberdeen not in a bad light, but I think it makes the point that antisocial behaviour exists in some form almost everywhere.”
